CHAPTER 5 Foundations of a Neo - Ricardian Class Analysis

چکیده

There is an enormous literature on the concept of class that consists mostly of debates about which properties should be included in the concept. The result is a variety of class schemes and arguments that center around which class scheme is most appropriate for capturing the class structure of modern society. Dahrendorf (1959) argues that classes should be identified with authority relations. Ossowski (1963), and later Wright (1979), produces class schemes by crossclassifying property and authority or dominance relations. The class scheme identified with John Goldthorpe is based on property, employment, and authority relations (Goldthorpe 1987; Erikson and Goldthorpe 1992). Parkin (1979) and Murphy (1988) emphasize relationships of closure, and Giddens (1973), the degree of “structuration.”

Chapter 2 Foundations of a Neo - Weberian Class Analysis

Introduction In the broad project of ‘class analysis’ a great deal of effort goes into defining class and delineating the boundaries of classes. This is necessarily so, because class analysis is ‘the empirical investigation of the consequences and corollaries of the existence of a class structure defined ex-ante’ (Breen and Rottman 1995b, p. 453). By starting from a particular definition, socio...

Trying to Make Sense of the Principle of Effective Demand

Most of the scholarly reinterpretations of the Principle of Effective Demand are not in line with Keynes’s original presentation of it in Chapter 3 of the General Theory. To substantiate this claim, Keynes’s definition is here first reproduced and then compared with different reinterpretations of the principle by textbook authors, and Neo-Ricardian, Kaleckian, and Post Keynesian economists. A n...

What Goods Do Countries Trade? a Quantitative Exploration of Ricardo’s Ideas

The Ricardian model predicts that countries should produce and export relatively more in industries in which they are relatively more productive. Though one of the most celebrated insights in the theory of international trade, this prediction has received little attention in the empirical literature since the mid-1960s. The main reason behind this lack of popularity is the absence of clear theo...

On the modernist elements of ‘Ithaca’ chapter in Joyce’s Ulys ses : Engaging students in class discussion

James Joyce's Ulysses is one of the hall-marks of modernism in the realm of the novel. In this novel, Joyce breaks away from old patterns, employs new techniques, and presents the modern state  of  man  as  well  as  his  soul-lacking  indeterminate  communication  with  others.  Freud's theories on the unique and private quality of man's mode of consciousness and the meddling of the past with ...

Empirical foundations for the resurrection of Heckscher–Ohlin theory

We decompose the factor content of trade into Heckscher–Ohlin–Vanek trade and Ricardian trade. We measure factor content using only the United States' technology and also as Leontief advocated, using the local technology. In either case, differences in endowments are quite important in explaining the factor content of trade. If one uses raw estimated coefficients as a means of comparison, diffe...
